Commitment to Standards
Epson's commitment to standards goes beyond our commitment to open architecture products. Our goal is to help drive positive changes in the industry that enable both customers and vendors to prosper. Epson is a core member of the OPOS, JavaPOS and UnifiedPOS standards boards as well as an active member of the IXRetail standards and NRF-ARTS Executive committees. These organizations are instrumental in shaping the current and future direction of POS solutions.
UPOS (Unified Point-of-Service): As a founding member of UPOS, Epson helped develop the UPOS standard, a retailer-driven initiative to combine two existing device interface standards under one specification to allow retailers freedom of choice in the selection of Point-of-Service devices. UPOS allows connection of peripheral devices (such as scanners, pin pads, check readers, display terminals, cash drawers and magnetic card readers) to PCs or POS terminals without program intervention.
OPOS (Open Point-of-Sale): Epson, along with Microsoft, NCR and Fujitsu, teamed to develop OPOS-the first widely-adopted POS device standard to help developers integrate POS hardware into applications for the Windows™ family of operating systems. Epson designed the foundation OPOS controls, service objects and application developer kits-these highly regarded tools have directly contributed to the widespread adoption of OPOS by POS system developers worldwide. Since its founding in 1994, the OPOS initiative has resulted in the creation of interface standards for more than 90 percent of all POS peripheral devices in the world.
JavaPOS (Java Point-of-Sale): Epson, with Sun, IBM® and NCR, teamed to develop JavaPOS, the first standard developed to help integrate POS hardware into applications for the Java language. JavaPOS is the standard which defines how an architecture and device interface (API) can access various POS devices from a Java-based system. Its primary aim is to allow development of POS applications with functions inherent to each device. An application designed in the Java language with JavaPOS compliance enables many different types of computer systems to use the same application.
ARTS (Association for Retail Technology Standard): NRF's Association for Retail Technology Standards is an international membership organization dedicated to reducing the costs of implementing new technology solutions through the use of industry standards. Since 1993, ARTS has been delivering software application and hardware connectivity standards exclusively for the retail industry. Epson is a member of the ARTS Board of Directors and has been a core member on ARTS committees and work teams, including the NRF ARTS Executive Technical Committee.
