Technology Leadership For more than thirty years, Epson has maintained a steadfast commitment to POS technology innovation. Based on the philosophy of delivering increasing value to our customers, Epson continues to develop industry-leading open architecture technologies that bring revolutionary new functionality to the point-of-sale. |
| TransScan Digital Check Imaging |
Top | TransScan in retail. Epson's exclusive TransScan technology is integrated into our TM-H6000II multifunction printer for retail. It reads MICR code and captures a complete check image in a single step, reducing check processing time by up to 40%, speeding customer checkout and dramatically reducing check processing fees. The TM-H6000II printer with TransScan integrates complete ECC with check imaging into existing POS systems, reducing the costs associated with processing, storing and routing paper checks by an estimated 38%. When combined with ECC, TransScan check imaging allows retailers to speed collection of returned checks and minimize costs and losses due to fraud.
TransScan in banking. Epson's exclusive TransScan technology is integrated into our TM-J9000 imaging transport/printer for banking. It is the only printer that has all the features needed to bring Check 21 to the teller station. It captures a two-sided image of a check in a single pass, and integrates seamlessly into tellers' existing workflow. And, because it performs image capture, check truncation and transaction proof and balance at the point-of-service, banks will speed check processing, minimize teller error and reduce check handling fees.
The TM-J9000 with TransScan provides virtually error-free MICR reading of checks at a rate far superior to stand-alone imaging devices. In addition, with Epson's precision TransScan technology, banks can virtually eliminate the risk of double-fed check images and their associated losses.
| ProofPlus ID Scanning |
Top | ProofPlus in retail. ProofPlus provides a powerful tool to enforce ID verification and fight fraud at the point of sale. ProofPlus is the first identification-scanning technology fully integrated into a POS printer, the Epson TM-H6000II. It captures a complete image of the customer's driver license or identification card, which can be stored along with the transaction record. When paired with the retailer's POS application, ProofPlus prevents cashiers from issuing the receipt until the customer's identification has been obtained, reducing the risk of costly lawsuits for the sale of age-restricted merchandise and dramatically improving legal compliance. ProofPlus enables immediate access to stored ID images, assisting retailers in rapidly identifying and locating the originators of fraudulent checks.
ProofPlus in banking. Epson's ProofPlus ID scanning technology is built in to our TM-J9000 imaging transport/printer for banking. It lets you capture a complete image of a customer's ID card at the teller window, bringing greater protection against losses due to bad checks. With the advent of the USA Patriot Act, banks now must adhere to stringent federal requirements to secure the identity and address of new accountholders and customers originating funds transfers. By using the TM-J9000 with ProofPlus ID imaging technology, banks can capture an image of each customer ID as part of any desired transaction, and store these images along with the transaction number. Stored images provide banks with a highly effective tool for demonstrating compliance with the USA Patriot Act.
Epson's patented SEAJet technology is built in to all Epson inkjet printers. SEAJet is a digital printing technology that uses an electric charge to activate the print head unit, forcing ink through the nozzle and onto the paper in a precisely controlled flow. Unlike thermal inkjet technology, SEAJet features a precision nozzle that produces a very high concentration of uniform dots that results in crisp, clear, easy-to-read graphics, coupons, bar codes and text. In addition, SEAJet consumes 40% less power than thermal inkjet technology, resulting in a lower cost of ownership over the life of the printer.
Designed specifically for Epson's POS TM-J7000 inkjet printer, SmartPass technology combines high-speed MICR reading, check printing and check endorsement all in one seamless and efficient function. Because SmartPass prints the front and back of the check in one step, check processing time is greatly reduced, providing faster transactions and increased customer satisfaction at the point-of-sale.
Epson's innovative QuickPass technology is built-in TM-H6000II multifunction POS printer. QuickPass reads MICR, prints and endorses a check in a single pass, shortening check printing time up to 50% over traditional check flipping methods. Printers using the check flipping technique employ a mechanical device to move the check through the printer and flip it over to print the other side. These mechanical devices increase check processing time and also increase the rate of check jamming. Epson's QuickPass check processing technology includes a second print head for check endorsement, eliminating the need to flip the check. With its dual head design, QuickPass provides one-pass check processing that increases throughput by 30% to 50%, eliminates check jamming, and increases overall printer reliability.
Epson's ESC-POS standardized POS printer control code greatly simplifies the process of integrating multiple devices into a POS system. ESC/POS eliminates the need to develop programs for printers in each system, enabling retailers to choose the printer that best meets their needs. With ESC/POS, you can use Epson TM series printers to link to different POS systems. ESC/POS offers commands for mechanical, hardware and software extension, making it easy to expand your system with new functions.
| Double Check Detector |
Top | Epson's TM-J9000 imaging transport and printer for banks includes a built-in 25-check auto feeder with a highly-sensitive document thickness sensor to prevent double check feeding. Designed for precision paper handling, the auto-feeder firmly secures each check against a D-shaped roller during imaging. In the rare case that a double-feed occurs, the auto feed mechanism detects the misfeed immediately. The double check detection sensor virtually eliminates the risk of double-fed check images, which expose banks to a high degree of risk and losses during the check imaging process.
| Right-Side Up Printing |
Top | Epson's exclusive unique right-side up printing capability is built into our single station TM-U230 impact kitchen printer. Firmware in the printer enables kitchen orders to print right side up when the printer is wall mounted, adding convenience and speeding the processing of food orders in busy restaurant kitchens.
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, or MICR, is used to describe the numbers and symbols that appear at the bottom of checks and are read by various types of scanning devices during check processing. Epson's TM-H6000II, TM-J7000 and TM-J9000 POS printers provide the highest MICR read rate in their class, with a proven MICR accuracy of 99.93% in live field testing. Epson's MICR accuracy rate exceeds that of any competitive POS printers available today. Our exceptional MICR performance translates to lower losses due to unreadable checks and a clear and measurable financial advantage for Epson customers.
| Connect-It Interfaces |
Top | Epson's unique Connect-It interface technology gives Epson POS printers more connectivity choices than any other printers available today. The Connect-It concept was based on the need to bring modern printing performance to older POS terminals. By installing a simple interface board into the Epson printer, retailers can bring specialized performance to their legacy systems while postponing costly system upgrades. From IBM to custom legacy system emulations, from serial to wireless interfaces, from smart card readers to pin pads, Epson's Connect-It interface family lets you benefit from a state-of-the-art printing features on both legacy or PC-based systems.
Most POS printers print items sequentially in the order in which they're rung up, requiring customers to closely scrutinize receipts to ensure that all appropriate discounts have been applied. With Epson's exclusive Clean Receipt technology for IBM legacy terminals, all transactions are saved in the IBM terminal's memory and sent to the printer at the end of the checkout process. The customer gets an easy-to-read receipt with all purchases organized by category, with discounts and coupon savings displayed next to each item. Clean receipt capability enables sorting by department/item code, department group/item code, item code only and a variety of other options. It provides unmatched flexibility in customizing printed receipts at the store level to accommodate customer preferences and buying behaviors.
